24,188 TEUs! The world's largest container ship calls at Nansha Port Area of Guangzhou Port (Picture)

At 1:00 AM on March 24, with a whistle, the ship "OOCL SPAIN", with a maximum container capacity of 24,188 TEUs, docked steadily at the Nansha Phase II Container Terminal of Guangzhou Port at night with smooth cooperation of the tugboat, before seven gantry cranes were immediately put into operation intensely.

So far, the world's largest container ship built in China had successfully made its maiden voyage to the Nansha Port Area, once again breaking the historical record of berthing ultra large ships in the Nansha Port Area.

"OOCL SPAIN" was built by Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering Co., Ltd. and delivered on March 15. The ship has a length of 399.99 meters, a molded width of 61.3 meters, a molded depth of 33.2 meters, and a carrying capacity of 228,000 tons. Its deck area is equivalent to 3.5 standard football fields, and it can carry 24,188 TEUs at a time. It is currently the world's largest container ship, reaching the height of 22 floors of ordinary residential buildings when fully loaded. It is currently one of the largest ships in the world, and can be called a "castle on the sea" and "king of cargo carriers".

This ship integrates the latest research and development achievements and intelligent means of Chinese shipbuilding enterprises in the field of container ships, and has the advantages of safety, energy conservation, environmental protection, and high degree of intelligence. "OOCL SPAIN" is the first new ship put into operation by OOCL after joining COSCO Shipping, and it is another milestone in the operation of COSCO Shipping's dual brand of centralized transportation.

The Nansha Port Area of Guangzhou Port, where the "OOCL SPAIN" ship stops, ranks first in terms of the container throughput capacity of a single port area in South China. As the core port area of Guangzhou Port and the growth pole of shipping logistics in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Nansha Port Area has achieved leapfrog progress in comprehensive capacity and port technology. Last year, it completed a container throughput of over 18 million TEUs. As the first fully automated container terminal Nansha Phase IV in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has entered the comprehensive commissioning stage, the Nansha Port Area has built 20 large container berths with a capacity of 100,000 DWTs or more, and its annual throughput of containers exceeds 24 million TEUs, realizing the specialized and intensive development of the container terminal.

According to the introduction, with the strong support of port units such as customs, maritime affairs, border inspection and pilot stations, Guangzhou Port is striving to build a more efficient, safer, and more high-quality port service brand, further optimizing the port operation process and improving the comprehensive operational efficiency of the port. In response to this docking operation, the Nansha Phase II Terminal of Guangzhou Port carefully organized and deployed, formulated an accurate operation plan, closely communicated with the shipping company on the stowage plan, optimized the operation arrangement throughout the process, and comprehensively ensured the smooth berthing of the ship and the safe and punctual loading of the goods.

It is reported that the "OOCL SPAIN" ship has been put into operation on the Asia Europe routes of the Ocean Alliance, adding new capacity to the Asia Europe routes of the Nansha Port Area, which will provide more sufficient space supply for import and export enterprises in the hinterland of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and further promote the high-quality development of the regional foreign trade industry.

After years of development, Guangzhou Port has become the largest comprehensive hub port in South China. In Nansha Port Area, it has built a container terminal operation cluster with first-class equipment and facilities, a ro/ro automobile terminal operation cluster, the largest grain unloading terminal and silo cluster in South China, the largest single near-port logistics center and cold chain center cluster in China, and the first fully automated terminal in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, consolidating and strengthening the functions of international container hub port, the largest port for domestic trade containers, the largest grain unloading port, important energy unloading port, and international ro/ro automobile hub port, so as to play a positive role in serving regional economic development, supporting the upgrading of physical industries, and ensuring food and energy security.

In the next step, Nansha Port Area will actively implement major national and regional development strategies. Relying on Nansha's geographical advantages, resource advantages and policy advantages, it will accelerate building itself into a world-class modern port, improve the comprehensive shipping service level, improve the sea-land two-way logistics channel, yield great results in key tasks such as ensuring connectivity and smooth logistics, and serve high-quality and sustainable economic and social development.
