Up to now, the International General Terminal Project in Nansha Port Area of Guangzhou Port has made remarkable progress. The land formation and hydraulic reclamation construction has been completed, and the harbor basin dredging and combined vacuum and surcharge preloading for foundation treatment are under way. The construction of the main structure of the terminal will continue in the future.
Progress: 20% of the Total Works Completed
Since its official launch on December 28, 2023, 20% of the total works of the International General Terminal Project in Nansha Port Area of Guangzhou Port has been completed. The total investment of the project is about 7.5 billion yuan, and a total of two 100,000-ton and two 150,000-ton general berths as well as 14 3,000-ton barge berths are built.
After the completion of the project, the general cargo throughput capacity of Nansha Port Area will increase by more than 15.5 million tons, and the container throughput capacity will increase by more than 500,000 TEU. The International General Terminal and various container terminals in Nansha Port Area will collaborate and link together, and the total length of the deep-water terminal shoreline will exceed 16km, forming a professional, large-scale and integrated terminal cluster, and it will become a modern port area with the largest comprehensive volume, the most complete service functions and the best multi-modal transport conditions in South China.
According to the relevant project leader of Guangzhou Port Group, the construction drawing design of main terminal, auxiliary road and supporting projects has been basically completed, and the main terminal project is scheduled to commence early next year. During this period, the project team will begin to purchase the equipment to ensure the smooth progress of equipment procurement and installation. It is expected that the equipment installation and commissioning will begin in the second half of 2026, to prepare for the formal operation of the terminal. In terms of environmental protection, the International General Terminal Project in Nansha Port Area of Guangzhou Port will adopt the advanced environmental protection technology and equipment to reduce carbon emissions and water pollution, which is in line with the development trend of green ports.
Role: It Will Become an Important Channel for International Trade
Twenty years ago, Nansha Phase I of Guangzhou Port rose from Longxue Island. From the rapid construction and commissioning of Phase I of the project to the successive commencement and completion of Phases II, III and IV of the project, Nansha Port Area of Guangzhou Port, which started from a tidal flat, has become an important comprehensive hub port area in South China and is growing into a modern deep-water seaport in the geographical and geometric center of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area.
Up to now, having built Nansha Phases I, II, III and IV container terminals, Nansha Port Area of Guangzhou Port has 20 deep-water berths for containers, with an annual container throughput capacity of more than 24 million TEU, ranking among the top single-port areas in the world in terms of scale. With the rapid development of global trade and shipping, the competition among ports is increasingly fierce. To further enhance the competitiveness and service efficiency of Guangzhou Port, Guangzhou Port actively promotes the modernization and intelligent transformation, and the construction of International General Terminal Project in Nansha Port Area of Guangzhou Port is an important measure of transformation.
As a key construction project in Guangdong Province and Guangzhou City, the International General Terminal Project in Nansha Port Area of Guangzhou Port has been included in the Infrastructure Interconnection Plan of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area issued by the National Development and Reform Commission. After completion, it will become an important channel for international trade, provide more convenient and efficient international shipping services for enterprises in the Area and promote the development of international trade in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area. “The International General Terminal Project in Nansha Port Area of Guangzhou Port is a key link in promoting the infrastructure construction of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area. With the joint efforts of all team members, we are confident that this project will be completed on time to meet the required quality and quantity.” The relevant project leader said.
